Challenge 1

What is the Extended Project?

You are beginning to study for the Extended Project, the theme for which is whatever you want it to be!  It is going to be your job to set out the mission statement for this year and, for this, you will have to investigate what an Extended Project is, what the criteria is, what the process will be, what the role of the teacher/supervisor should be and what the final product could be.

Your challenge is to describe the Extended Project.

Challenge criteria

You will: 

  • Research the Extended Project;
  • Understand the purpose of the Extended Project;
  • Create a powerpoint presentation that will cover the essential points;
  • Write a mission statement which has well-developed action points;
  • You will explain what the criteria is for the Extended Project, what the process will be and what the teacher/supervisor should do;
  • Prepare and rehearse a formal presentation that will last no longer than 5 minutes.

 Challenge format

  • You will have 2 hours to complete this challenge;
  • Only two people in the group can be assigned ‘investigators’;
  • The group must have a plan for the two hours and distribute tasks effectively;
  • The mission statement must be no more that 200 words and on one piece of A4 paper;
  • You must have a formal presentation planned and prepared that lasts no longer than 5 minutes;
  • You must include all of the information you researched;
  • There must be obvious quality participation, quality discussion and quality team working.

 Presentation format

  • You will showcase your work to the rest of your class.

Challenge 2

The Extended Project Challenge

The next step in the process is to firm up a subject plan – and this is going to be your next challenge.  Your subject will be the topic you have already emailed me.   This is something in which you have a keen interest, and you would like to explore this interest further.

Your challenge is to produce a project proposal on your chosen subject.   

Challenge criteria

You will: 

  • Research the topic;
  • Understand the background, media coverage, research, conferences available, groups, individuals etc;
  • Refine your research – keep the useful research and eliminate the information that is unnecessary;
  • Create a title/question for your project that will allow you to argue a specific point;
  • Write a brief account of why you have selected certain information in preference of other pieces;
  • You will then write a time plan from September to March (3 periods per cycle) of how you will investigate, who you will contact and when you will begin to refine your research and begin writing your final piece. 

Challenge format

  • You will have 2 hours to complete this challenge;
  • Only two people in the group can be assigned ‘investigators’;
  • The group must have a plan for the two hours and distribute tasks effectively;
  • The brief account must be no shorter than 300 words and on one piece of A4 paper;
  • You must include all of the information you researched;
  • There must be obvious quality participation, quality discussion and quality team working.

 Presentation format

  • You will showcase your work to the rest of your class.
