Introduction

The MFL Department gives all Collingwood students a lively introduction to language learning, the chance to develop their skills of Listening, Speaking, Reading and Writing, and an insight into other cultures.

Beginning in Year 7, students start French in the first half term.  They are put into sets after this first half term and study both French and Spanish.  In Year 7 students have three lessons of French and two lessons of Spanish per cycle.  In Year 8 students have two lessons of French and three lessons of Spanish per cycle.

Our French course centres around the topics of Harry Potter and Geography.  The Spanish course is delivered through our own SOW which is supplemented by exercises from the Mirá textbook.  We cover a range of topic areas such as personal information, personality, family and where I live.

In Year 8 students continue with both languages.  In French, students study the language through the topics of Parkour, Paris and Music.  In Spanish they cover the topics of 'La Comida' (food), 'Mi Instituto' (school) and 'Mis Vacaciones' (holidays).  The department uses its own Schemes of Work, supplemented by textbooks and a wide range of authentic resources such as videos and extracts from books and magazines.

In Year 9, students have the option to study French and/or Spanish in preparation for a language GCSE.  We have regular contact with our partner schools in France and Spain and trips offered to students include the French Exchange and the Spanish Exchange.

Facilities and Resources

The Department has a suite of rooms in the Kingston building.  Each room contains an interactive whiteboard with listening facilities. There is also the opportunity to use the computer room near the MFL Department.
